We mourn the passing of a friend. Michael Jackson died last night at his home in London.

It's not often you get to know an honest to goodness giant. Michael Jackson was a giant, indeed, and his place in the beer community was unique. Now, he's gone. Not exactly surprising, given the state of his health, but still a shock.

Michael gave us our voice and vocabulary, and grounded the history and traditions of beer. Beginning in the seventies with the publication of the World Guide to Beer, Michael began beating the drum demanding more respect for beer. He swirled and tasted beer, filling pages with new words. He traveled unceasingly, discovering styles and traditions long gone or on their way out the door. He chided the mainstream press for its beer provincialism. He even wore one glove, just one glove, to mock a similarly named celebrity.

Originally a newspaper reporter, a badge he wore with pride, he never lost the newsman's love for a breaking story or a tight deadline. He was a prolific writer, an expert in whiskey and fine food as well as a pioneer beer writer.

We will all lift a pint in his memory.

homebrewing - cooler mashtun mod

a pretty common homebrew mod, see here...

old igloo cooler, stainless steel braided dishwasher hose, i cut the ends off the hose and pulled the rubber out from the inside... so now its a holely hose... basically acting like a strainer. CPVC tubing suitable for higher temps... homedepot actually didnt have any cpvc tubing only the connectors so i had to hack some of the dishwasher hose to use as a connector... also had to use some extra washers to get a tight seal... yay

got my 2nd carboy... in the brown box... now i can ferment twice as much woohoo

these are all the bottles that i have left for the english pale ale... its kind of hard to save people bottles... maybe i need to write names on them or something

here's the hefe weizen... conditioning in the bottles... i added extra sugar during bottling to up the carbonation... i hope i dont get any bottle bombs

not bad, good carbonation, nice aroma, medium hoppiness, a bit sweet, probably due to high mash temp... mmm
im so bad at describing beer... must taste more beer... i need more bottles...
oh its a bid cloudy, cause i wasnt very careful pouring the wort from the pot to the fermenter, and i only used a primary fermenter, and i didnt siphon from the fermenter to the bottling bucket, also i dindt use any whirloc or irish mosh which is suppose to help clear it up
a week in the fridge should help with settle it though... not that its suppose to affect flavor or aroma... just appearance
